Ningbo Museum /

Ningbo Museum
The architectural scheme proposes a composition of three elements: an ephemeral exhibition volume, a massive base and a group of three cone-like halls. The ephemeral exhibition volume is raised above the massive administration base to form a lobby and entertainment level from which the visitors ascend into one of the three cone-like spaces upon starting their tour. At large these elements are positioned in a manner of overall harmony and balance to form a composition that follows the principles of an ideal landscape. Approaching the New Ningbo Museum from the plaza, the building resembles an ideal coastal landscape, similar to the perception of a seafarer returning to the coastline of Ningbo.

The inner organization of the museum as well reflects the transition from water to land, and the tension and correlation between these two elementary forces. On entering the new Ningbo Museum, the visitors will find themselves in a wide-open lobby where all public areas of the museum are intermingled in a natural flow. The lobby is only structured by the three massive cones. Inside, each cone defines its separate starting point for three different exhibition areas that are located in the exhibition volume above.

The unified surface of lobby and cones consists of horizontal stone plies, that depending on the lighting conditions change their appearance during the course of the day from earth layers to a gently rippled water surface at night.
