Sport Facility for BUCT

The Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) is affiliated to the Ministry of Education. As one of China’s key institutions of higher learning, BUCT has developed from an institution of scientific specialties to a comprehensive university with a core curriculum of science, engineering, economic management, languages and other liberal arts.

The goal of this competition was to provide a concept for a multifunctional sport facility, which could hold different kinds of indoor sports, and offer space for 3500 spectators. Additionally there was the requirement for more flexible areas that could be occupied with student activities or offices.

The project is located in an already densely built campus, which is limiting the space for the challenging program. The solution to this is to use the maximum footprint and create one volume that contains three separated building parts with “buffer zones” in between. The facility should function as one entity which is inserted into the existing campus to revitalize the entire surrounding.

Building part one: The first and biggest part is the multifunctional gym, which can hold public basketball games or university events.

Building part two: In the second, middle space houses different kinds of indoor sports such as badminton, squash or table tennis, it also contains an Olympic sized pool.

Building part three: As part one and two are shared with the public and the students, part three is only for university related functions, spaces here are generally smaller sized.

Two clearly defined zones control and connect the circulation between the three building volumes and therefore function as a buffer. The intention was to create several “see and to be seen” spaces, in which indoor as well as outdoor activities are visible to each other.

The building was lifted at the north side to create a dynamic, curved shape. This stands also for its mainly sportive function. To emphasize the shape of the building, closed surfaces of the facade are designed in perforated metal mesh; openings are covered with thin louvers, which stress linearity.

The green roof visually enhances the environment, since all the surrounding buildings are higher and can profit from it, roof windows are cut into the green surface and follow the linearity of the facades, creating a 5th elevation.
